On Tuesdays at Sarah Lawrence and Wednesdays at Purchase College...

Kashruth and Holiday Celebrations at Hillel

As we have grown, Hillels of Westchester has added to our Shabbat and chagim programming. We offer full High Holiday services, as well as Pesach seders, Purimshpiel and Megillah readings, Tu B'Shevat seders, a week of programs in our two sukkot at both Purchase College and Sarah Lawrence College, Chanukah celebrations, and a Lag B'Omer picnic.

We run a Kabbalat Shabbat service and kosher Shabbat dinner every week - the first and third Fridays at Sarah Lawrence College and the second and fourth Fridays at Purchase College. All are welcome to these celebrations. On average, 15 students attend the prayer service, and 30-40 attend dinner. Larger Shabbat dinners, and our Pesach seders, attract 50-60 students.

At Hillels of Westchester, we are committed to serving the needs of our diverse Jewish student population. Because we are not large enough to offer concurrent minyanim, we have learned to balance the need for traditional ritual practice with the desire to be creative and flexible.  We currently offer egalitarian, mostly-Hebrew prayer, with some English-language poetry and readings interspersed.

Only Purchase College offers a kosher meal option at an increased cost. Students can make arrangements with Chartwells Dining Services. Our other campuses do not offer kosher food, but students can make arrangements to have a local kosher caterer deliver meals and many students choose vegetarian meal alternatives.  We use several local caterers to offer kosher meals at all Hillel holiday and social programming, and arrange with our campuses to have Kosher-for-Passover food available to students who request it. If you are a parent and your student is sick, call Hillels of Westchester at 914-251-6498 and we'll provide some homemade kosher chicken soup.
